R0 x A201_Transforming Infrastructure and Landscape at the Brussels Ring
The R0 x A201 project reimagines the intersection of the Brussels Ring and Avenue Leopold III near Zaventem Airport, addressing challenges posed by outdated infrastructure, ecological fragmentation, and urban connectivity. Spanning 38 hectares, the initiative blends contemporary urban design with sustainable infrastructure and ecological restoration.
The redevelopment restores the Woluwe Valley by resurfacing its watercourse along a one-kilometer stretch, transforming it into a dynamic ecological and landscape corridor. This approach minimizes the footprint of road infrastructure, creating a harmonious balance between urban accessibility and natural revitalization.
Innovative water management systems, such as cascading infiltration zones, address runoff from road infrastructure while enhancing biodiversity.
A network of cycling highways, tramways, and pedestrian pathways reconnects Zaventem and Diegem, prioritizing active and public transportation modes. Ecological enhancements include native vegetation, reforestation, and the integration of habitats for local fauna and flora, which together reduce ecological impacts and improve biodiversity.
Along the corridor, new urban spaces are created to reconnect adjacent neighborhoods, fostering vibrant community interactions. The multidisciplinary combines urban planning, landscape architecture, and ecological engineering to set a benchmark for innovative and sustainable urban redevelopment.
